Part IV: Spin – God’s Wild Children: #7 (Chapter 74)
Nana kept us apart for the rest of the morning, putting me to work at my regular Saturday chores – dusting the floor around the living room rug, dusting the steps, making the two beds, and washing dishes.
The swimming pool wouldn’t be open until noon.
Nana gave Danny a faded blue towel, the same one I had almost blown my nose in. “This will be yours when you stay over. I’ll show you how to embroider your name.”
“Oh, boy,” he said, “my very own towel!”
“Girl’s work, girl’s work, Danny’s doing girl’s
work,” I sang as I sloshed dishes around in the sink.
“I am not!”
Danny yelled. “I bet you don’t have a
towel with your name on it.”
That smarted.
Nana had tried to teach me how to embroider, but
she had given me a pillowcase with an outline of some stupid daisies, never
anything interesting. I picked up a fork from the soapy water and threw it into
the strainer without rinsing it.
Nana came into the kitchen and put her arms around
me. “I’m just trying to keep him out of your hair,” she whispered into my ear.
“Why can’t I embroider my name on a towel?”
“I never knew you wanted to,” she said, rubbing my
back. “After you finish your chores, I’ll get you a towel, too.” She picked up
the strainer and dumped all the flatware back into the water. “Remember what I
said about rinsing.”
Can’t I
ever get anything right?
I picked the utensils out of the water, this time rinsing them before putting them away.
