I still believed my grandparents 14 years later, when another Special Delivery letter arrived, the summer before Mother died, announcing that she and Johnny were finally getting married.

Mother invited the whole family out to California for a big celebration.

I called Nana long-distance. “What’s the deal here, their getting married twice?”

“Honey, they were never married, don’t you know that?”

“Oh.”

I hung up.

Who knows what to believe anymore?

I sent my regrets Special Delivery.
